Actually, the Bows works in a special way with the different upgrades and it's definitely worth it to know, let me explain it to you. (Normal Path) The bow has a high DEX scale and is supposed to do a decent damage if your focus on DEX, but the only way to do that is to do headshots (in PvE aspect), otherwise the damage output is mediocre for some reason. (Probably because the scale goes to the arrow, not to the bow, it will be explained in the Divine / Magic upgrade) The only Bow that is worth to using in combat is the Compound Bow, which being a quality weapon all you need is to have 27 STR and the rest in DEX that way you will be doing a powerful damage. (Fire-Chaos / Lightning Path) 'The best option' for many reasons, 0 STR and DEX requirements except for the minimum so you can focus your points to another stat, the Bow will gain a secret auxilary effect, it's more situable for combat beacuse it's not headshot dependant and you will be doing more damage than the Normal Path, but why? When upgrading a Bow in the Fire or Lightning Path, the base physical damage of the Bow increases much more than the Normal Path (Like a Raw upgrade), by comparing damage outputs in a [11 + Longbow (25 DEX)] vs [0 + Lightning Longbow] it seems that the final damage output of the Bow is more influenced by the base physical damage than the scaling of the weapon itself because the Lightning Bow has more physical damage than the other bow, tested on different enemies. With the elemental upgrade, the bow itself IS NOT capable to do elemental damage, but IT'S CAPABLE to strike in the enemy's elemental weakness, this is the secret auxilary effect that i say before. For example, the Slimes in the Depths are weak to fire, if you shoot them with a Fire Bow, you will do a lot of damage to them REGARDLES OF THE ARROWS you use. In others words, the Bow will do pure physical damage but the elemental weakness or resistanses of an enemy will apply and that can change the final damage output. (Divine / Occult - Magic) The upgrade that does the most damage of all, that being said, however is the most expensive to use. As I mentioned earlier, it seems that scaling goes directly to the arrow and not to the Bow. By improving the Bow along the Divine / Magic path, the scaling passes to FTH and INT specifically. With any type of arrow you will be doing mediocre damage, however when using the Moonlight Arrows the damage becomes tremendous, not so different from the damage of the Dragonslayer Greatbow, that is why those arrows cost 500 souls just like Great arrow. Recap: (Normal Path) Pro: For quality builds (Compound Bow), works fine like a secondary weapon, Cheapest. Cons: Mediocre damage except for the Compound Bow, need total a total focus on a stat for full damage, headshoter. (Fire-Chaos / Lightning Path) Pro: Acceptable damage, versatile, more suitable for combat, an enemy can die easly if it's weak to specific elemental Bow, still do pure physical damage, can be a main weapon. Cons: Need more than one Bow to upgrade, the form that you'll need to farm slabs, an enemy can endure a lot if it's resistent to specific elemental Bow. (Divine-Occult / Magic Path) Pro: Heavy magic damage if you focus on FTH or INT and use Moonlight Arrows, have the most powerfull damage of any upgrade on this way, it allows to the cleric and sorceres classes to be a good archers too. Cons: Need a harsh invest on points like the Normal Path, the most expensive, for some situations, mediocre physical damage.
The Long Dark is a hardcore first-person survival title from Hinterland Games, currently available on Xbox One and Steam. After a long period in Game Preview, it's finally here, and it's full of great content, is a wonderfully challenging and beautiful game. It's among my personal favorites on the console right now.
If you're looking for something new and challenging, here's how to start your love affair with The Long Dark.
What is The Long Dark?
The Long Dark is first and foremost an explorative survival adventure, featuring deep gameplay systems that'll have you hooked for weeks, if you go in with the right state of mind.
The Long Dark puts you in control of the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness, following a global geomagnetic disaster. The details of exactly what went wrong are scant, but you'll find out the truth in the game's episodic story mode, currently dubbed 'Wintermute.'
In The Long Dark, animals are unnaturally aggressive, abnormally harsh blizzards ravage the land, and the only humans you will find are frozen corpses. The sandbox mode offers varying levels of difficulty and a range of large maps crammed with opportunities for exploration.
Quick Facts
The Long Dark features large sandbox areas that are connected. More are being added as time goes by.
It has a deep crafting system that is very demanding, but very rewarding.
It has dynamic day, night and weather cycles, and they all play an important part in survival.
You can leave feedback on the game at www.HinterlandForums.com.
The game also has a friendly community on reddit.
Finding that single crucial rifle round, a box of matches or the final component for a complex crafting schematic makes The Long Dark a persistently rewarding experience, and it's available for a reasonable price on both Steam and Xbox One. I'd argue it's among the best $20 you can spend on Xbox One right now.
Vital Information
Before jumping into the challenging sandbox mode, it's probably best that you head into the game's story mode first. Wintermute will introduce you to game mechanics one by one, serving as a narrative-driven tutorial before going head first into the long dark of The Long Dark.
Playing on survival mode's Voyager (normal) difficulty, you will find that the first few nights are the hardest. Supplies are low, and you might appear a significant distance from any form of shelter. The first thing you need to do is learn the controls. Learning what you can do at the outset is very important. You can view the controls by going to the options menu. Most of my notes will refer to the Xbox One version in this guide, but you can customize keyboard controls at will on the PC version.
Next, prioritize your vital stats. The Long Dark has a minimalist UI to maximize immersion. You can view your statistics at any time by pressing the Menu button.
The Long Dark How To Make A Bow
Note: All vital stats decrease both in real time and when you take actions that speed up the passage of time. When you break down a log for wood, for example, it will usually tell you how long it will take, and how many calories your action will burn. This won't account for changes in the weather, however. I've nearly frozen to death because I underestimated how fast my temperature would drop while harvesting a deer carcass.
Here are your vital statistics that you need to manage. We'll get into how to keep them at safe levels in the next section.
Condition: Think of your condition as your hit points. When it reaches 0 percent, it's game over. And in The Long Dark, death is permanent.
Temperature: This is arguably the most important stat to manage, as it will deplete your condition faster than other statistics. The time of day, weather, wind speed and being wet can all affect your temperature. We'll get into how to stay warm in the next section.
Fatigue: While being tired won't impact your condition as harshly as being freezing cold, you can collapse as a result of fatigue, which is something you do not want to occur. Particularly outdoors.
Thirst: This is another stat that is particularly dangerous to ignore, but relatively easy to maintain. Drinking safe water often is crucial.
Hunger: You can get away with being hungry for quite a long time, but it's still important to keep those calories topped off.
The First Night
You can spawn randomly anywhere on the region you select when you create your new sandbox. Part of the fun of The Long Dark is exploring, discovering new locations, and finding those crucial items you need, so I won't give you too many pointers.
The first thing you should do is check your current status. If you're in the middle of a blizzard, getting into shelter as soon as possible is a priority. You can't make fires in the middle of a blizzard, because the wind will be too high. If the weather and 'feels like' temperature isn't too low, there's not as much reason to panic.
Sometimes the most dangerous thing in The Long Dark is ignoring how long it takes to do stuff.. nearly killed myself harvesting meat, lol. pic.twitter.com/CJgxnHHG3p

Presuming you start at Mystery Lake, which is where all beginners should start, there are various cabins and other interior locations you can use as a 'base' shelter while you gather enough materials to move forward. Getting to the lake the region is named after can be a chore, however, particularly in the first couple of nights. Mystery Lake is a large frozen water mass, complete with a visitor's center and tourist cabins. You'll recognise it from the game's title screen. The location is hard to describe because there are no maps, and indeed, Mystery Lake isn't the only base you can find, far from it. Exploration is key, but managing the risk of doing so is also important.
Gather sticks. You will start with the means to start a fire, which includes both tinder, matches and fuel. Sticks can be found all over the ground, typically near trees. Sticks and branches respawn over time, particularly after heavy winds and blizzards. Remember that breaking down larger sticks will burn calories, so be careful. You can also create tinder from sticks in the inventory screen.
Create fires using the radial menu. You can place them anywhere on the ground near you on flat terrain. Use fires to build up warmth to survive outdoors on your way to a more permanent shelter.
Boil water by selecting the fire. Boiled water is safe to drink, and it's super important to have a consistent clean water supply as you travel. You can also use fires to cook food once you get it.
Don't worry too much about food. You can survive hunger for a longer amount of time than other stats, although it will compound how fast your condition decreases. Mystery Lake's most abundant source of easy food is cat-tail plants, which grow near frozen rivers and lakes. Human dwellings tend to have tins, chocolate bars and other sources of calories, until you find the means to hunt animals.
Place a bedroll to sleep. You can sleep outdoors on a bedroll, but beds indoors are obviously the better option.
Check your inventory. On Voyager difficulty, you will start with some rudimentary supplies. Most items can also be broken down to create other crafting materials.
Check your clothing. You can equip two layers of clothing to enhance your ability to withstand the cold. This makes exploration gradually easier, giving you the ability to withstand low temperatures and the game's wind chill factor.
Explore. Don't be afraid to explore, even if it means dropping your condition levels to do it. New locations will have important items like guns, bullets, hatchets, tin openers, and various other valuable gizmos for surviving at higher levels.
Experiment! You can interact with the game's world in many intuitive ways. Once you gain a hatchet, you will be able to break furniture down into reclaimed wood or cut up carcasses for meat, leather and entrails. Dropping items like hides and guts indoors allows you to dry them out, which is necessary for certain crafting recipes, such as a hunting bow.
Use the game's notebook The Long Dark's radial menu also offers a journal, which allows you to make notes. This can be useful for keeping track of stored items, the locations of crafting tables, and more.
The Long Dark's primary hazard is the environment itself, which mercilessly tries to kill you with its onslaught of wind and ice. But there are also dangerous animals to be aware of.
Wolves
Wolves seem to be the most abundant animal threat in the game. Wolves like to attack from behind. Sometimes you can simply outrun them, and then turn and face them down while backing away. You can use light sources, like flares or firebrands to frighten them away too. If you're using a weapon, aiming it at the wolf will generally prompt them to attack, so you'd better land your shot! Wolf meat can be eaten, and their hides can be used to craft powerful clothing.
The Long Dark on Xbox One is super fun, super subtle. Love emergent gameplay moments. Solid even in Game Preview. @HinterlandGamespic.twitter.com/VWCQ6GW6mb

If you get bitten by a wolf, you can generally fight it off. If you have a weapon like a hatchet, you can even injure them in the process, which often leads to them bleeding out and dying later on. Headshots are a guaranteed kill on wolves, while other shots will cause them to flee and bleed out. They also leave a blood trail, so you can track them down. Wolf bites need to be healed via the first-aid radial menu option. Bandages and disinfectant will heal you fully. If you get infected, you will need antibiotics and bedrest to survive. Wolf attacks will also damage your clothing.
Bears
Avoid bears, at all costs. Being hit by a bear will take 75 percent off of your current condition, and will one-hit kill you if you're already struggling. Bears will also shred your clothes, leaving you exposed to the cold. Bears appear in both the day and the night.
Bears can take way more punishment than wolves, but a headshot with a rifle will put them down, too. Bears will also bleed out over time if you injure them enough. Like wolf attacks, bear attacks need to be healed with bandages and disinfectant, and you'll also end up spending a lot of cloth and leather to repair any damage to your clothing.
If you do have to get in range of a bear for whatever reason, you should begin backing away. Bears will curiously saunter towards you, and eventually rear up on their hind legs and charge. If they see you aim a weapon, they will also charge, and you will probably die. Bears roam around an area for a few in-game hours and then move on.
Have fun!
The Long Dark is an incredibly deep game, and discovering how it all works is part of the fun. These pointers should help you get started without ruining the experience of discovery. The game is designed for multiple playthroughs, giving you information on how well you survived each time.
The Long Dark has regular Xbox achievements, but also has feats for achieving certain goals (viewable via the menu), which can provide passive bonuses on new playthroughs. This can be handy as you attempt the higher, more punishing difficulties, including the brutally challenging Interloper mode.
If you're a fan of survival adventures, The Long Dark is among the best on Steam and certainly on Xbox One. I cannot recommend it enough.
This is a fan-made, experimental mod for the game The Long Dark.
The goal of this mod is to give the player a new option for fire starting, a BowDrill that you can craft, this Bow Drill will be harder to use and take a little longer to start the fire, as you would expect.
WARNING
This mod uses a modified version of the ModComponent mod. This should not affect any other items that you have loaded using that mod, since I only enhanced it without changing how it works. I have submitted a PullRequest with my changes to the creator of that mod and as soon as he merges I will remove this warning.
Disclaimer
DO NOT report bugs to Hinterland Studios if you use this mod; any bug you encounter may be due to the mod.
This is completely fan-made and I have no affiliation with Hinterland Studios whatsoever.
This mod is experimental; it should work but there is no guarantee it won't screw up your save somehow (though corrupting a save is highly unlikely). It's also very rough in terms of use (you need to edit an XML file).
How to install
Install zeobviouslyfakeacc's awesome Mod Loader for TLD.
The mod loader will create a directory 'mods' at the root of your game directory; it will also add a first mod: AddModdedToVersionString.dll. Leave it; it will make sure your game appears as loaded in the main menu.
Extract the contents of the BowDrill.zip into the mods folder.
The next time you start the game, the item should show up as something you can craft.
How to use
SOON(tm)
How to uninstall
To uninstall the mod, remove all the files in the mods folder.
If you want to completely remove modding capabilities from your game, use zeobviouslyfakeacc's Mod Loader for TLD again; you can disable the mod loading patch from the tool.

Cold is your worst enemy in The Long Dark. Living through your first day in this hardcore survival simulation isn't easy, and thriving in the Canadian wilderness is even harder. If you're new to The Long Dark and need some starting tips, we've got you covered.
Survival in the freezing tundra requires three basic things; shelter, food, and water. All three resources are available with a little exploration. Just watch out for snow storms, cold weather, and the biting cold at night. That doesn't even take into account predators like roaming packs of wolves or unstoppable bears. Get started right with a handful of tips and tricks all to help you survive in the great white north.
The Long Dark is a race against time. Every moment you're awake and in the cold, you burn calories -- the colder it is, the faster you'll go hungry. Night is a dangerous time to be outside, if you want to live, priority #1 is..
Step #1: Find Shelter
Shelter comes in several forms. There are caves, huts, and other structures to find in your random location. Anything is better than being outside when the sun goes down.
Man-made structures tend to be your best bet. Carefully scout the area for predators and make sure to note locations of caves, mine-shafts, cottages, shacks or any other shelter you can use in case of an emergency.
Watch for weather -- at night, the temperatures are extremely low. Try to stay inside at night and get as much sleep as possible. Save all activities that can be accomplished indoors, such as eating, repairing or crafting item, for night so you can maximize your exploration time during the day light.
Before leaving a shelter, check the weather. If it is extremely foggy or if there are blizzard conditions, stay inside until the bad weather clears up. You'll need sunlight and good weather. Why? Because you need supplies.
Step #2: Find Food
Food is your most important resource. Find and stock up as much food as possible. There are multiple sources for food, but at the start of your journey, you'll only have access to scrounged food.
Later on, you'll be able to hunt wildlife and cook the meat. Bunnies and deer roam areas. Even wolves and bears can be hunted, but for now you're going to want to find any processed or packaged food. Search containers, shelves, and cabinets until you've got enough to last the night. About 1,500 calories should do before you continue searching.
Calories last longer the warmer you are. Try to find better clothes than the rags you start with, and always save sewing kits for warmer gear. Don't waste repair kits on low-warmth outfits!
Avoid going outside at night, during snow-storms or in the heavy fog. If you're caught in a flurry, quickly duck into a cave or any shelter until the weather passes. To help make survival easier, you'll need another resource..
Step #3: Start A Fire
Eat hot food and warm yourself by a fire if shelters aren't an option. A fire can be set with the [Tab] menu anywhere outdoors, you just need two things; tinder and tinder plugs.
Collect logs for use as tinder, and sticks for tinder plugs. Newspaper is worthless as tinder, but works well for tinder plugs. Tinder is your fuel, while tinder plugs help you start a fire. Certain items, as described above, are better suited for each role. The more tinder you add to a fire, the longer it will burn.
Fires can save your life in a pinch. They will keep wolves away and keep you warm while exploring new areas. Always carry some extra tinder and tinder plugs in your inventory.
Step #4: Explore
Shelters don't provide food for long. Eventually you'll have to give up scrounging and start hunting animals; bunny, deer, wolves or bear.
To do that, you'll need a bow or a rifle. The bow can be crafted, but you'll need to find the rifle on your own. Ammo is scarce, and the survival knife will only get you so far.
During the day, use the light to locate untouched areas and check for tools, materials, weapons, medical supplies, extra food, or new clothes. Bring your bedroll or you won't be able to sleep away from home base!
Stay on high ground or stay close to natural wall formations like cliff walls. Always try to keep a good view of the area you're about to explore. Predators are everywhere, and you're easy pickings for a hungry bear.
Watch out for predators, and be prepared to run from a fight. Bears are extremely dangerous, and wolves hunt in packs. Use flares to keep wolves away, or throw extra bits of food between you and the predators. Wolves and bears will check out the food before coming after you. Always try to avoid combat if you can.
Speaking of running; don't carry too much weight. Just like the cold, carrying more weight than necessary increases your calorie drain. Carry too much and you won't be able to run. Dump marginally useful junk at a landmark and move on.
Step #5: Survive
Take in the stark majesty of the Canadian wilderness and survive as long as you can. Don't be afraid to leave your preferred shelter after the area is completely cleared out.
If you're going to start hunting, do yourself a favor and scout your prey. Watch where they go at night and find a good vantage point. Whether you're using a bow or a rifle, never shoot unless you're positive to score a hit. Ammo is rare, and you don't want to waste arrows.
Animal carcasses will last several days before they disappear. Strip the body of meat and use a fire to cook for best results. You can partially strip a carcass and return later to keep the meat fresh longer.
If you have plenty of medical supplies, it might be a good idea to save ammo entirely and take on a wolf one-on-one with a knife. Just make sure to take off any nice clothes and put on something a little less quality -- clothes get ripped apart by wolf bites.
Wound the wolf, run away, fix yourself up, and follow the blood trail to the body. Fallout new vegas vampire mod. Eventually, wolves and other wounded animals will die. Don't lose track of the blood trail.
That's all you need to know to survive in The Long Dark! Got any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments!
